Liberties and Loyalties: Challenges for American Catholics

Since their first settlement in Maryland, American Catholics have navigated the complex and dynamic relationship between Church and state. Are American principles, ideals, and institutions compatible with Catholic faith, teaching and practice? This conference promises to illuminate the debates of the past that continue to inform those today.


Dr. Michael Breidenbach is an Assistant Professor of History at Ave Maria University,  where he researches and teaches the history of American politics, religion, and law. He is finishing a book entitled, The Pope's Republic: Liberties and Loyalties in America, and he is co- editor of The Cambridge Companion to the First Amendment and Religious Liberty, forthcoming with Cambridge University Press. He previously taught at Princeton University and has    been a visiting scholar at Oxford and Cambridge, where he earned his Ph.D. He graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Northwestern University.
